Dr. Vivian Ewa

Dr. Vivian Ewa, MBBS, CCFP (COE), FCFP, MMedEd, FRCP Edin., CHE, completed her family medicine and care of the elderly training at the University of Calgary. She then went on to complete a master’s degree in medical education at the University of Dundee. She is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the U of C and is also the Interim Medical Director for the Alberta Health Services - Calgary Zone Seniors, Palliative and Continuing Portfolio.

Dr. Ewa's clinical practice involves consultation at the Bridgeland Seniors Health Clinic, Geriatric Consult team and Seniors Health Outreach Program (SHOP) to long-term care (LTC) and supportive living (SL) sites in Calgary.

In addition to her clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Ewa is involved in medical education and teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the U of C.

She is passionate about her work in geriatrics and has worked on several projects over the years to improve transitions of care for seniors through the continuum of care.

She has served on various committees at the local, provincial and national levels such as the Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) Guidelines Development Panel, chair of the Alzheimer’s Disease Society of Canada Communicating Dementia Diagnosis Guidelines Development Panel and Continuing Medical Education (CME) Planning Committee for the Canadian Geriatrics Society (CGS). She is a member of the Annual Geriatrics Update Planning Committee at the U of C and the Curriculum Subcommittee of the Ontario Long Term Care Clinicians Medical Director Committee. She currently sits on the Appropriate Prescribing and Medication Use Strategy for Older Albertans (APMUSOA) Committee and is a member of the Alberta Provincial Continuing Care Quality Committee. During the height of the COVID 19 pandemic, she served on the provincial Continuing Care COVID 19 Response Working Group and did several presentations at the local, provincial and national level on COVID 19 response in long-term care.

Dr. Ewa has participated in several research and quality improvement projects including the development of a care referral pathway to optimize transfer of long-term care residents to emergency department during times of medical urgency.

Dr. Ewa is the 2019 recipient of the CFPC-CGS Award of Distinction in Health care of Elderly presented by the Canadian Geriatrics Society and the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
