Diffusion of Innovations Handout

About This Tool

It summarizes literature1 characterizing Rogers’ different adopter groups.

As you apply it, please keep the following in mind:

  • Where someone fits on the curve is change specific – i.e., they could be an early adopter for one change and early/late majority for another.
  • Individuals don’t shift along the curve.
  • The characteristics for each adopter group are not synonymous with personality traits – e.g., it’s possible to have a “grumpy” innovator. They should be framed in the context of how the individual thinks about or approaches a change.
  • The characteristics are not intended to be used as a checklist. They are generalizations
