We adhere to the privacy principles of the Canadian Standards Association regarding the collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal information. Compliance with these principles is verified regularly and revised as needed.
AMA commitment to our members
Please note: In this privacy statement, "personal information" means information that reveals a distinctive trait about you, helps to identify you and is not available in the public domain.
To offer and provide the services and privileges to which members are entitled, the AMA must collect, use and disclose information in relation to its members.
In doing so, we make the following commitments:

The AMA is responsible for the personal information under its control and will designate an individual or individuals who are accountable for the organization's compliance with established privacy principles.

Identifying purposes for collection, use and disclosure of personal information
When we collect personal information with your membership application, renewal or any other form you provide, the AMA may use or disclose the information for the purposes listed below (referred to in this document as the “Purposes"):
- Administer, increase opportunities for or facilitate access to member programs, benefits, services, etc., offered by the AMA.
- Engage in policy development, advocacy activities or establish funding arrangements.
- Support efficient operation of the units (including specialty sections, some committees) of the association.
- Perform analysis to improve member service and satisfaction.
- Communicate with you regarding the Purposes.
Use of the information for other purposes is strictly prohibited.
Consent for the collection, use or disclosure of personal information
Except for the Purposes or where required by law, we will not collect, use or disclose personal information about you without your consent.
Limiting collection of personal information
- We will collect only the personal information necessary to fulfill the Purposes identified by the AMA.
- Information will be collected by fair and lawful means.
Limiting use, disclosure and retention
- We will not use or disclose personal information for purposes other than those for which it was collected, except with the informed consent of the individual or as required by law. Within the AMA, personal information is available only on a need-to-know basis.
- We may disclose your personal information to our endorsed service providers (agents) or organizations that provide us with professional, administrative or information processing support services. We do not sell or otherwise share your personal information.
- Where your personal information is disclosed, we communicate our expectations for privacy standards and take reasonable steps to be confident the other party(ies) comply with the spirit of this commitment statement and with the privacy protection rules it contains (e.g., signing confidentiality agreements).
- Personal information will be retained only as long as necessary for the fulfillment of those purposes. Records are stored, archived or disposed of according to strict standards and schedules.

The AMA is responsible for ensuring that personal information is as accurate, complete and up-to-date as necessary for the purposes for which it is to be used:

Individual access to personal information
Upon request, the AMA will inform you about the existence, use and disclosure of your personal information. Subject to the restrictions provided by law you have access to that information. You can challenge the accuracy and completeness of the information and have it amended as appropriate.
Please advise us of changes to your information over time.

Challenging AMA's compliance
You can challenge the AMA's compliance with these principles by contacting the designated individual or individuals accountable for the organization's compliance. Subject to restrictions required by law, you may withdraw your consent for the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information by the AMA for some or all of the Purposes.
You must provide the AMA with reasonable notice in writing of your intention and the details of your withdrawal. Please note, however, that such a decision may mean that the AMA is unable to continue to provide you with some products, benefits or services for which your personal information is required.
