President's Letter
Dear Members:
Recent years have caused at-risk individuals in cities and towns to become homeless or lose access to support for substance use disorders or mental illness. While they have struggled to get the help they need, increasingly toxic street drugs have taken a horrible toll. We lost 1,498 vulnerable Albertans in 2022 to unintentional drug poisoning. In 2019 that number was 626.
We must do better and do more. See our election issue profile on this complex situation that requires a range of harm reduction, addiction treatment and psycho-social interventions.
You are always welcome to share your thoughts with me. You can email me via [email protected]. You can also comment on this letter on the AMA website.
