Cancer care: public engaging

The bottom line: wait times for oncologist care are unsafe and worsening.

President's Letter

Dear Members,

As the first theme in our Acute Care Concerns series, advocacy for cancer care has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. I have given many interviews and there have been multiple stories in the past 48 hours. The bottom line: wait times for oncologist care are unsafe and worsening.

Each issue of the acute care campaign will run about six weeks, so it is time to turn our attention to our next focus: general surgery. That doesn’t preclude continued commentary about cancer care. In fact, we are releasing some new data today to help inform the public.

As for general surgery, these hard-working and essential colleagues deliver life-saving procedures seven days a week at all hours. Their work is being hindered by growing human resource shortages in the support teams needed for both emergency and scheduled surgery. The impact is extremely concerning. I will share the details when we launch next week.

It is summertime but things are not easy. We will keep speaking out for better patient care and solutions that can maintain the access that patients need and deserve. Building up a failing acute care system will not be simple and we will seek solutions through advocacy for resources and capacity – including our Acute Care Stabilization Proposal.

I know everyone is tired. Thank you for all that you have been doing and continue to do. Stay tuned.

Regards,

Paul Parks
