CII/CPAR adoptions surge in last year

The use of the Community Information Integration & Central Patient Attachment Registry (CII / CPAR) continues to grow across Alberta.

Launched in 2017, CII/CPAR enables the safe and secure sharing of vital patient health information with Alberta Netcare, directly from their electronic medical record (EMR). It also enables eNotifications to be sent to providers when their patients are seen in emergency departments, have a hospital admission or day surgery – keeping patient care teams in the loop and up to date.

As physicians and teams continue to recognize how effective the tool is for enhancing communication between providers all over the province, CII/CPAR is being widely adopted. Between October 2023 and October 2024, an additional 265 clinics went live on CII/CPAR, bringing the total number of clinics live to 815 across the province.  Collectively these clinics have formally attached more than 2.5 million patients to a primary care provider in CII/CPAR, improving their continuity of care.

As physicians and teams embrace CII/CPAR, ACTT is providing essential information, training and support to ensure uptake is as seamless and effective as possible, including:

Over the last year, ACTT has made improvements to our supports, including the launch of an electronic CoP form, replacing multiple PDF-versions that require scanning and email delivery or printing and faxing to eHealth. Other improvements since October 2023, are facilitated change management for new CII data types, and ongoing improvements to ACTT’s Provincial Power BI dashboards that track participation and conflict rates.

ACTT also administers a $12 million Acceleration Grant, which is entirely funded by Alberta Health. The funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the limit is reached. More than $7 million in grant funds have been paid out to date, compensating physicians for their time and the administrative requirements to enroll and participate in CII/CPAR.

ACTT remains committed to supporting Alberta physicians and teams use of CII/CPAR and continuously improving how the tool functions to enable more optimal patient outcomes. We also expect even more uptake of CII/CPAR in the coming months as it's a key enabler of the anticipated panel-based compensation component model.
