Section designates
When you join the AMA, you become a section designate (i.e., assigned to a section based on your area of practice).
There is no charge for this, and if you haven’t chosen a section on your membership form, AMA staff will choose one for you.
Active voting section members
To become an active section member, you need to pay that section’s dues (in addition to your AMA membership dues).
Your section dues fund all projects that your section undertakes on your behalf:
- Dealing with allocation increases to the physician services budget.
- Advocating for section members both inside and outside the AMA.
- Funding section and committee meetings.
Full section membership allows you to vote in your section’s elections. You will find that certain areas on our website are restricted to active section members only.
The AMA strongly encourages you to support your section by paying active membership dues, attending your section AGMs and participating on your section executive.
Associate non-voting section members
Physicians can become active members (with voting privileges) of only one section of the AMA but may take associate (without voting privileges) membership in other sections.
