The Alberta Medical Association is recruiting for the position of Senior Consultant, Health System Transformation.

In this role, you will play a key role in supporting the Executive Vice President, Health System Transformation, to implement the direction and initiatives of the HST branch. You will do this by maintaining a “big picture” orientation that consistently looks to integrate information, ideas and strategies across branches, projects and initiatives. You understand and utilize the power of developing and maintaining professional relationships to advocate for members and achieve organizational goals.

The AMA has a hybrid work environment; therefore, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work from home within Alberta but will be required to go into our Edmonton or Calgary offices when required. HST Overview

The Health System Transformation branch represents the AMA’s interests by supporting physicians in their role as leaders within the health care system. This includes facilitating the development, integration and implementation of innovations in health care delivery by working with and providing support to various provincial health strategic initiatives, including but not limited to advancing the Patient’s Medical Home and integration with the health neighborhood.

It also has the responsibility for the management and operations of the AMA’s Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT).

Position Overview

As the Senior Consultant, Health System Transformation (HST), reporting to the Executive Vice President, HST, you will lead and/or support work and initiatives arising from HST projects and committees; ensuring HST is able to meet strategic objectives and achieve desired results and outcomes for members.  

In this role, you will:

  • Provide leadership and direction to direct reports (i.e., hiring, training, mentoring, assigning work, performance management, etc.), fostering a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Manage assigned deliverables and/or projects within the HST branch.
  • Provide advice to EVP on project delivery, strategic and operational agenda planning, communications, consultation, and change management.
  • Manage and support work arising from assigned committees and working groups (e.g., AMA-AH Task Force, Indigenous Health Committee, Section Executive meetings). Proactively and intuitively determining work/priorities based on discussions in meetings and ensuring a flow of information to the EVP and appropriate stakeholders.
  • Attend meetings with external stakeholders (Alberta Health, AHS, etc.) on behalf of the EVP, representing the AMA and bringing forward AMA’s perspective.
  • Liaise and build rapport with key strategic stakeholders within the province to support health initiatives.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement and advocate with members for HST initiatives and programs, such as provincial level health system initiatives, as well as the work under the ACTT program.
  • Prepare reports/papers, presentations and other business materials for Board, Government and other stakeholders.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in health care, health sciences, business or related area. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • At least 10 years of experience within health care including:
    • working with physicians both as clinicians and as administrative leaders
    • Business administration/operational leadership
    • People leadership
    • Project management
    • Leading change management and/or improvement initiatives.
    • stakeholder engagement and relations
  • Experience working as a clinician in a professional capacity is an asset.

Skills

  • Able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the complexities of the Alberta health care system.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; able to adapt messages based on the key audience. Able to simplify complex concepts.
  • Proven people leadership skills: able to foster a positive team culture built on trust, inclusion, innovation and collaboration with a member-focused orientation.
  • Strategic Planning
  • Ability to lead sessions that reach consensus and/or collaborative outcomes.
  • Demonstrated competence in Change Management, quality improvement methodologies, performance measurement, and clinical informatics.  
  • Able to rapidly assess and understand situations.
  • Able to work in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to work within a changing environment.

The salary range for this role is $120,417 - $156,544 per annum.
