What are the benefits of working with the AMA?
As a person who's worn many hats in hospitals - nursing student, porter, operating room attendant, and now Medical Student - I have a deep love for our healthcare system. To join the AMA's work in advocating to make it better for patients, staff and learners is an exciting and important job.
Preparing for a career in medicine
Jake grew up in Edmonton, but obtained his BSc in Biology from a small school in Iowa in 2022, where he had a music scholarship in piano and organ.
Before getting into medical school, he was enrolled in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. He also worked at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton at that time.
Now Jake is a first-year medical student at the University of Calgary, where he also serves as the VP External: Provincial for the Calgary Medical Students’ Association.
AMA activities so far
In my short time as an AMA member so far, I attended RF as an alternate delegate
representing the U of C Medical Students and have a Leadership Position in the
AMA's Medical Student Advocacy Committee (alongside the previous MSA Board
Observer.)
Upon receiving a warm round of applause after speaking at RF for the first time, I knew the AMA was the right place for me.
On a personal note
Outside of studying, you might find Jake practicing organ music at the Jack Singer Concert Hall (at midnight, of course), singing with a local Calgary choir or hiking in the Rockies.
